Narrabeen Sports High School

In August 2006, Year 8 students at Narrabeen Sports High School were very eager to join the Schools Promise program to help (albeit in a small way) support Mahboba’s Promise. Many students had been studying Debra Ellis’s book, Parvana, about the plight of children in Afghanistan, and were already interested in a charity that was devoted to helping children less fortunate than themselves. A presentation at a whole school assembly sparked further interest and understanding. The wonderful visual aspect of the presentation helped make it real for so many of our students who previously had little to no knowledge about Afghanistan and the sufferings of its people.

So, what did we do in order to raise money? Year 8 was very keen on having a “Retro” mufti day, plus a cake stall and in total we raised about $250 to go towards buying a basketball hoop for one of the schools that the organisation supports. The “Retro” day was great fun and staff and students alike embraced the opportunity to dress up in fashions from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s – there were some truly outrageous costumes! Below are some photos of the day! Hope you enjoy them.

Narrabeen Sports High School Year 8 students would like very much to continue supporting this very worthwhile organisation next year and in the years following.
