Malanda State High School Profile

Malanda State High School is a small friendly rural secondary school of approximately 350 students located on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland. We like to think of ourselves as a small school with a big heart. We live in a region of lush green rainforests, freshwater crater lakes and rolling hills and generally enjoy a safe and friendly lifestyle. Our students are actively involved in the wider community helping with raising money and awareness for issues such as Relay for Life, Loud Shirt Day, Jeans for Genes and Bandanna Day.

Student involvement in leadership is encouraged at our school with students being able to become members of a number of committees. The Fun for a Cause Committee consists of a group of students from Years 8 through to 12 who work together to help others in need. The committee decided that Mahboba’s Promise would be the focus of this year’s charity work after one of our senior students read Mahboba’s book and shared it with other students. The group decided that whilst they wanted to help a range of causes that it was important that students from a small rural community became involved with an international organisation to raise awareness of global issues for women and children.

At this stage the Fun For a Cause Committee has donated $1000 to Mahboba’s Promise. The money has been raised by having change tins at the tuckshop, holding a sausage sizzle at the local markets and a garage sale run by the local Catholic Church. We look forward to supporting this organisation with further ventures this year.
