Macarthur Girls High School

Students, staff, parents and community members of Macarthur Girls High School joined together in a unique project to support Mahbobas Promise. The school community knitted more than 170 scarves that were sent to Panshir Valley school.

The project at Macarthur was organised by staff member Lynelle Sacilotto, who saw that many students who were Afghani refugees felt empathy for the situation in Afghanistan and were eager to do something to help. The idea of knitting scarves soon inspired many other students and staff.

Nundle Woollen Mills, S and S Wholesalers and Australian Country Spinners donated hundreds of balls of wool and knitting needles. Then the project took on a life of its own as knitting began with the aim of getting the scarves to Panshir Valley before the winter. Every scarf was an individual piece, a snug and colourful wrap created with care and love.

The scarf project for Schools Promise was a unique example of a whole school community taking action to create a practical and beautiful way to show their care and concern for the girls at Panshir Valley. A banner and a photo album were sent with the scarves to help the girls picture their ‘sisters’ at Macarthur.
