 Dick Smith Community Centre

Thanks to the generosity of one of Australia's best known entrepreneurs, the Dick Smith Shelter will be based on the successful Hope House model.

Situated in the Panjshir Valley, work has already started on the building in May 2011 and the foundations have been laid. Locally, the project is in the hands of one of the best engineers in Kabul. Mahboba's Promise has established a very good relationship with the local government and community elders. Our project is very well received and we do have support from the people of Panjshir valley.

Handicraft Project

In 2010 Mahboba’s Promise received a $5,600 grant from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Along with funding from corporate sponsor Stateless Systems, we are using it to set up a Handicraft Project in Afghanistan so that widows can be trained to become self sufficient.

Using a mix of traditional skills and modern technology, widows make fashion and homeware products which we will sell in Australia. As well as teaching and preserving some of the traditional Afghan artisan skills including weaving, beading and needlework, widows will be encouraged to set up their own small businesses. Some talented women in Australia have offered their time and skills to design a mixture of home and fashion items that the women can make.

LATEST NEWS July 2011!

125 Women are enrolled in the Handicrafts Project. There are two groups of women involved in the project:
  1. Group A includes 90 skilled women who are involved in embroidery works. We provide them with raw materials, fabric, travel costs and sewing wages.
  2. Group B currently includes 35 women at who are involved in the Mahboba's Promise Handicrafts Project Courses. Most of these women are unskilled. The Project establishes 6 month hand embroidery and needlework courses for these women to help them improve their skills and ultimately their lives. Participants in the Project have their travel costs paid for them. After finishing the courses, these women will go to group A and start to work and earn an income.

Permaculture Project

Early in 2009 Mahboba’s Promise purchased 5 acres of land just outside Kabul for the purpose of creating a permaculture site. It will be used as a training centre for widows, orphans, school groups and the local community and ultimately farmers throughout Afghanistan. The plan was to establish a demonstration permaculture garden, a community garden and a nursery which will produce future income for the project. The objective is for the site to be self-sustaining within 5 years.

Muslim Aid Australia (http://www.muslimaid.org.au) has generously provided most of the funding for this project. They have also had major input into the overall concept and planning of the project.
The Permaculture Research Institute of Australia (http://permaculture.org.au) has kindly helped with the site design, training and overall consultancy.

LATEST NEWS July 2011! Sidiq Rawi regularly visits to monitor and evaluate the work done at the Permaculture site. The visits involve the inspection of the compost making and the vegetable growth. Sheds are also being built for chicken and cows. The Permaculture site is flourishing, the trees have started flowering, the irrigation system is working well and they might harvest some of the fruits this year. 80% of the structure work of the site as per Permaculture design has been completed.

Takhar Community Centre

Over a decade ago an earthquake devastated the Takhar region in the north eastern province, destroying homes, killing thousands of people and leaving many children orphaned. Today, many of these children are still homeless.

A major project of Mahboba’s Promise is to build a community centre with residential facilities for 48 boys in Takhar. We have set a goal to raise $125,000 to build a centre for these boys and many others, to provide a home and to educate them, thereby helping them to grow into positive men who will contribute to their society. (DONATIONS and how to support this project).

LATEST NEWS July 2011!  The team is all ready to start building and now is just waiting on improved security in the area.

Leadership training

We are currently working on a Leadership Training Project for children in Afghanistan, including classes in philosophy, politics, ethics and social studies. We are very excited to be creating the strong, intelligent and compassionate leaders of Afghanistan's future.

Hope House Medical Centre

In April 2009 Mahboba’s Promise realised a dream: to open a Medical Centre to provide medical and dental care and improve the standard of health and hygiene for Hope House orphans and widows, and the local community. There is an on-going need to source equipment and pharmaceuticals to maintain this important aspect of Mahboba’s Promise’s work.

Here's the latest news from Mahboba's Promise Hope House Health Care Clinic

·          Treatment of 215 people; 80% were Hope House students and 20% were the Hope Hope house staff, widows and people from the surrounding community.
·          Psychological treatment was also given to students who had psychological problems.
·          As a result of regular medical check ups and health advice by doctors there is an improvement in the general well being and health of the children.

Abdara School for Girls

North of Kabul in Panjshir Valley, in the remote Hindu Kush mountain range, Mahboba’s Promise built the first school for girls. The Abdara Girls' School now educates over 200 girls. Each year Mahboba's Promise upgrades the school. Last year, we landscaped the school grounds, as they were being washed away by the melting winter snow which threatened the school foundations. A wall was built around the recreation area so that the girls could play games in privacy. This year we are hoping to get sporting equipment for the school and put safety rails on some dangerous steps and terraces.
