Widow's Sponsorship Appeal 2011

As fighting continues in Afghanistan, we are once again asking our generous supporters to dig deep to help the unseen victims of the war. Mahboba’s Promise is seeking new supporters of its Widows’ Sponsorship Program, with every cent going towards helping Afghanistan’s women help themselves.

Mahboba Rawi, founder of the charity and recipient of the Order of Australia medal, said the charity’s Hope House centre in Kabul was helping teach women vital skills.

“Since we set up the centre four years ago, dozens of women have been helped by the kind donations of Australians.

“The widows’ sponsorship program has given women the chance to escape the grinding poverty of life in Kabul and has provided practical training courses in sewing and quilting, hairdressing, beauty therapy, teaching and nursing, all helping towards self-sufficiency,” Mahboba said.

“For as little as $1.65 per day you can help make a big difference to someone’s life,

or if you would prefer to make a one off donation money can be used to provide essential fuel, warm clothes and staple foods,” Mahboba said.

Current national nutrition data for Afghanistan shows 21 per cent of women are malnourished, and a huge number of children suffer from health problems because of drought and conflict.
