Poverty and hardship
Humans in Crisis
Poverty in Afghanistan is terrible, widespread, chronic and destructive. Fifty per cent of children suffer from malnutrition, one in three children have lost a parent, children work long days in difficult tasks to scrape together enough to feed their families. Due to seemingly endless wars, the whole society has collapsed and everyone fends for themselves as best they can.

These people are helpless, they look forward and see only more struggle and no way out. Mahboba's Promise would like to help every single person suffering, first to alleviate their hunger, cold and sickness for today and then to provide them with the confidence and skills they will need in order to create better lives for themselves and a better social structure for their country.
The task is huge, but we are working hard with the generous support of Australians everywhere.
- Many live in insecure accommodation like those in this tent city.
- Life gets even harder in the winter.
- Once women have lost their husbands it is hard for them to provide for their children.
- Children learn to make meagre amounts of money at a young age.
- Childhood as we know it is lost to them.
- For many begging is their only possibility, so they stay on the streets day after day.
